Classroom under Sail (KUS)

Project description

 

Personality development in adolescence through experiential settings within the project „Classroom under Sail“ (KUS).

The KUS project is a research project of the FAU and has been under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas Eberle (Leader of the Research and Teaching Unit School Education, School Develepment and Experiential Learning) since September 2012. The project was initiated in 2008 by Prof. Dr. Claudia Kugelmann and Dr. Ruth Merk.

34 grammar school tenth-graders experience for six months – in addition to the contents of the curriculum – the responsibility and organisation of steering a ship to foreign countries.

It is very interesting for scientists that this floating classroom, with only a few uncontrollable external influences, allows a high variance elucidation for the personality variables, which are to be researched multi-methodically.

According to planning, this includes self-competence such as commitment, flexibility, stamina or willingness to perform as well as factors of social competence: ability to work in a team, cooperation and conflict ability or intercultural competence. These „key qualifications“ should develop in a more targeted way than with comparable groups in the regular setting due to the special challenges that students and teachers face.

So far, the project has been used, among other things, to record in qualitative procedures which socio-emotional maturation processes are undergone on the cruise.

This season’s focus is on quantitative empirical surveys that fit into pedagogical and psychological research traditions, such as the mutual influences of emotion and motivation on confrontation with new performance requirements.
